In response to a video in which the president of the Los Angeles City Council, Nury Martinez made racial remarks and suggested using redistricting to reorganize power in the city, resigned from her position on Monday morning.
Martinez is stepping down as president, but she hasn’t indicated that she’ll leave her council seat, despite mounting pressure on her, two other council members, and a senior labor leader who were all seen on camera.
On Sunday, after almost a year of this video being private, it was leaked.
Along with two other Latino leaders present, Martinez made comments about Councilman Mike Bonin’s son describing him as “Parece changuito,” or “like a monkey.”
Councilman Mike Bonin is white and his son is black.
Martinez also said that how Councilman Bonin handles his son like he were an “accessory.”
