World’s Biggest Meat Supplier Attacked By Cyberattack

JBS, the world’s largest meatpacker was hit by a ransomware cyberattack on Sunday. It has caused panic among meat suppliers around the globe. The attack could lead to shortages of meat or raise prices for consumers.

This is a similar cyberattack that caused  Colonial Pipeline, a major fuel supplier in the US to shut down pipeline activity for 5 days till the ransom was paid.

Brazil-based JBS is also in touch with the Biden administration & stated that the attack most likely originated from the criminal groups in Russia.

White House principal deputy press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said “The White House is engaging directly with the Russian government on this matter and delivering the message that responsible states do not harbor ransomware criminals,”.

Why is this important: Cyberattacks like this have become very common in recent days. A policy expert also blamed this on the rise of cryptocurrency.

Update: JBS mentioned that their products should be back by Wednesday and they are doing everything they can to protect themselves from future attacks.
