AI-generated Evidence Destroys Korean Actor’s Career, Police Confirm

The scandal upended the career of Kim Soo-hyun, who was once a household name in South Korea.

What happens when a viral video can destroy a career overnight — and it turns out it might not even be real?

That’s the question South Korean authorities are now grappling with.

As they move to arrest a YouTuber accused of fabricating evidence in a scandal that engulfed actor Kim Soo-hyun and reshaped his public life.

Police say the creator allegedly manipulated screenshots of text messages and even used AI-generated audio to falsely suggest that Kim had dated actress Kim Sae-ron when she was a minor.

The claims exploded online last year, shortly after Kim Sae-ron’s death at 24, sending shockwaves through South Korea’s entertainment industry.

At the centre of it all is YouTuber Kim Se-ui, who denies wrongdoing and calls the investigation a “subterfuge meant to disrupt his work.”

But investigators paint a different picture. “The audio was generated by AI,”.

Authorities say, adding that altered messages were used to construct a false narrative for financial gain — one they argue “destroyed the basis” of Kim Soo-hyun’s career.

Scandal Sparks Debate

And the fallout? Severe. The actor, once one of South Korea’s biggest stars, has largely disappeared from public life and is reportedly receiving psychiatric treatment.

As one media analyst put it, “In Korea, reputation is everything. Once it cracks, it spreads fast — and rarely heals cleanly.”

Kim Soo-hyun has denied underage dating allegations and filed lawsuits.

While Kim Sae-ron’s family had previously supported the claims that fueled the controversy.

So where does this leave things — justice for misinformation?

Or another reminder that in the age of AI and viral outrage, truth sometimes arrives long after the damage is done?
