How US Military Oil Tanker Collision Caused Massive Fire In North-Sea

US Military Oil Tanker collides with cargo ship.

A massive oil tanker loaded with jet fuel and a cargo ship carrying highly toxic chemicals collided in the North Sea on Monday morning.

The crash sparked explosions, fires, and a whole lot of environmental concerns.

The crash involved the US-registered Stena Immaculate, which was hauling fuel for the U.S. military.

It also involved the Solong, a Portuguese-flagged ship carrying 15 containers of sodium cyanide—yes, the kind of stuff that’s dangerously toxic and doesn’t mix well with water.

A Crew Member Still Missing

One crew member from the Solong is still missing, and the search has been called off.

Meanwhile, 36 people were rescued, with one hospitalized.

A crew member from the Stena Immaculate described the Solong appearing “out of the blue” and slamming into them at 16 knots, forcing a frantic escape onto life rafts.

As for the aftermath, jet fuel has already leaked into the sea.

Experts are still assessing whether any sodium cyanide has spilled—because if it has, that could mean the release of hydrogen cyanide gas, which is extremely bad news.
