Iceland has given the green light to whale hunting for the next five years, despite fierce opposition from animal rights and environmental groups.
Under the new permits, hunters can target up to 209 fin whales and 217 minke whales each year during the June-to-September season.
Why Iceland is Killing Whales?
The primary reason for the government to issue such controversial licenses is that they believe the practice is sustainable.
Another argument those who support the practice give for the culling is that it adds $94 million to the national economy.
This argument is disputed by the Whale and Dolphin Conservation group.
Critics Are Furious
Critics, including Iceland’s environment association, argue this decision ignores animal welfare concerns.
Conservationists like Sharon Livermore of the International Fund for Animal Welfare called the decision an influence of “a few wealthy whalers” on policy.
Critics have rejected the justification given by the government that goes against environmental and animal welfare concerns.
