Japan Airport Cancels Flights As WW2 Era Bomb Exploded on Runway

An unexploded bomb that dated back to World War II caused a minor explosion at Miyazaki Airport on Japan’s Kyushu island on Wednesday.

The blast, which occurred on a taxiway, sent a cloud of dust into the air and forced the cancellation of 55 flights.

Japanese media reported that the cancellations affected more than 3,400 passengers.

The Bomb Was Dropped By US in WW2

The US had to bomb the Japanese airport in World War II as it was originally an Imperial Japanese Navy base during the war.

Footage from the scene showed part of the taxiway caved in, but there were no reports of injuries.

Officials from Japan’s transport ministry confirmed that the explosion was caused by an unexploded US bomb.

Airport To Resume Flights Today

Japanese Spokesman Yoshimasa Hayashi told local media that the airport will resume its operations on Thursday (today).

Unexploded ordnance from the United States has been found in the area before, including in 2009 and 2011 at nearby construction sites.
