57% of Americans Eat Inflammatory Diets, Study Says

A recent study from Ohio State University reveals that nearly 60% of Americans are consuming pro-inflammatory diets.

Such dietary routines significantly increase the risk of heart disease, cancer, and other chronic health conditions, the research noted.

The Research

The study, published in Public Health Nutrition, used the Dietary Inflammatory Index to evaluate the impact of diet on inflammation.

Lead author Rachel Meadows noted that 57% of the US population was at risk of getting cardiovascular diseases by eating such diets.

Black Americans, men, and individuals with lower incomes, were characterized to be more prone to such diets, the research noted.

Pro & Anti-Inflammatory Diets

Researchers recommend introducing more anti-inflammatory foods, such as ginger, dry fruits and green tea, to reduce inflammation.

Pro-inflammatory foods include red meat, alcohol and processed foods that have high amounts of sugar and inorganic fats.

The researchers did note in the study that even if someone was eating enough fruits and veggies, regular intake of pro-inflammatory foods will still increase the risk of heart diseases.
