Argentina’s security services have announced the creation of an Artificial Intelligence Unit to predict future crimes.
The announcement has raised human rights concerns among civil society organizations who claim that the technology will be used in violation of privacy.
Argentina To Predict Crimes Using AI
According to the new legislation, the AI unit will reduce crime rates by intense surveillance of criminal groups and people suspected of committing crimes.
President Milei, a far-right libertarian who came to power late last year, has pledged a hardline approach to crime by following El Salvador’s controversial prison model as well.
The ministry of security didn’t disclose how the government is going to process the information they collect.
Human Rights Issues
However, human rights experts have warned that the new measures could be used against specific groups and violate human rights.
Amnesty International warned that “large-scale surveillance affects freedom of expression because it encourages people to self-censor or refrain from sharing their ideas”.
