Japan Population Drops By Record 800,000 in 2022

Japan’s population has decreased by shocking 800,000 in 2022, according to data from the Internal Affairs and Communications Ministry. The population crisis that the country has been facing for decades is expected to leave a consequential mark with more people dying than being born. For the first time, Japan recorded more births than the number of people dying, since the government started recording the data.

Population Fell For 14th Consecutive Year

According to the data, 771,000 births were reported in Japan as compared deaths, which stood at a skyrocketing 1.56 million. A report by the leading Japanese news agency, Kyodo News, all the 47 provinces of Japan reported the huge population drop, the first time since 1968.

Foreign Residents Increasing

The report also mentioned that foreign residents to Japan increased by 10.7% in 2022. The Japanese Prime Minister. Fumio Kishida has called the significant drop in the birth rates a “crisis”. Kishida announced annual funding of $25.2 billion as a childcare package in the next three years to encourage couples to have babies.
