Microsoft Says Chinese Hackers Attacked US Infrastructure

Microsoft has accused the Chinese state-sponsored hackers of attacking critical infrastructure in the United States. A Chinese group of hackers had been spying on key infrastructure based in the US and other US territories in Guam which mostly has military bases.

Hackers Active Since 2021

The statement said that a Chinese sponsored hacking group known as Volt Typhoon has been actively targeting the US since 2021. The group has applied activity that could also be applied to other European countries as well, with much more efficiency. Mao Ning, the Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson, rejected the allegations of hacking from the Five Eyes countries made up of the United States, Canada, New Zealand, Australia and the UK.

Mitigation is a Challenge

The report said that the cyber-espionage campaign targeting critical US infrastructure is one of the largest spying campaigns unleashed by the Chinese hacking group and “mitigating this attack could be challenging”.
