Considering the Chinese app a national security threat, a dozen of senators have introduced a bill seeking to ban TikTok. The new legislation will give the commerce department the power to impose restrictions on apps and technologies that pose national security to the US.
TikTok Criticised The Bill
Citing national security reasons, Democratic Senator Mark Warner said that the bill will include other US-averse countries like Iran, Cuba, Russia, North Korea, and Venezuela. TikTok in a statement criticized the move and said that any “U.S. ban on TikTok is a ban on the export of American culture”.
Ban Is Unlikely
Some experts believe that an all-out ban on the video-sharing platform is near impossible. Shuman Ghosemaumder, a former fraud czar at Google said that it’s almost impossible to think of banning such an app that has millions of users in the US. “Practically, its extremely difficult and probably unlikely,” he said.
