Advisors to the Biden administration opened back-channel communications with a senior Chinese diplomat, after Pelosi’s visit to Taiwan in August, reports the Wall Street Journal. Beijing widely cut communication to the US and both sides were looking for reengament.
The three hour talk between the two presidents was prepared for weeks through the back-channels. Among other topics Biden and Xi discussed Taiwan, where Xi strongly defended his side. Biden’s team did not see an immediate threat of China invading Taiwan.
