A latest study reveals that antidepressant medications can alter the structure of the human brain. It has discovered that the medications aimed at developing human mental health can have adverse effects on the Gray and White matter inside the brain.
About The Study
The recent study in Austria has concluded that antidepressants are not entirely associated with improving mental health but can have negative impacts on the overall brain. Professor Jonathan Repple, the leading author of the study mentioned that the recent results went contrary to our previously held expectations. Human brain is not as rigid as once thought to be the case but can experience rapid changes. “We found that treatment for depression changed the infrastructure of the brain,” Professor Repple said while presenting the study at European College for Neuropsychopharmacology.
How Effective Are Antidepressants?
It is difficult to say how effective antidepressant drugs are. Experts believe that imbalance of certain chemical messengers (neurotransmitters) causes depression. The effectiveness of such drugs must be the focus of future studies so that the negative impacts are minimized. The Treatment generally varies from case to case.
