Prime Minister Ariel Henry stated in a press conference that the Haitian government has proclaimed a state of emergency after a 7.2 magnitude earthquake struck the country Saturday morning, killing at least 304 people.
According to the country’s civil protection department, more than 1,800 individuals were hurt.
The Western Department, Southern Department, Nippes, and Grand’Anse will be under a state of emergency.
One hospital in Jeremie, in the south, has said that it is overburdened with patients.
According to the administration, the hospital has placed up tents in its courtyard.
According to the US Geological Survey, the earthquake struck around 12 kilometers (7.5 miles) northeast of Saint-Louis-du-Sud and was 10 kilometers deep (USGS).
The first lady of Haiti, Martine Moise, stated her heart “hurts” after hearing about the earthquake south of Grand’Anse, which caused massive devastation.
