A CIA-linked former intelligence official, allegedly sitting on a hidden fortune in gold bars, is now behind bars himself — but how did things spiral this far?
David Rush, 49, has been described by US prosecutors as a “master manipulator” who misled neighbours, even claiming he was a pilot.
He used his senior security access to cover his tracks.
A federal judge has now ruled he must remain in jail, calling him a serious flight risk with both the “means and motive” to disappear.
So what exactly is he accused of? Prosecutors allege a trail of deception: fraudulent time sheets worth around $70,000.
Unexplained “work expenses” paid in gold and foreign currency, and missing assets the CIA could not account for.

Case Sparks Legal Debate
Then came the big discovery — FBI agents reportedly found more than 300 gold bars worth about $40 million, along with $2 million in cash.
And dozens of luxury watches inside his Virginia home. That’s not exactly pocket change.
“He cannot be trusted and is fully willing and able to skirt the rules,” government lawyers argued in court, according to CBS News.
But his defence calls the case “sensational,” insisting intelligence work can look unusual from the outside.
His lawyer argues he cooperated fully, even providing access codes to the stored gold.
Now the court is left with one big question: was this a carefully hidden empire… or a misunderstanding blown into something far bigger?
