Can one of the biggest legal battles in corporate history finally be nearing its end? Johnson & Johnson certainly hopes so.
The healthcare giant has offered up to $5.5 billion to settle tens of thousands of US lawsuits.
Claims say its talc-based baby powder and other products caused ovarian cancer.
While the company insists the allegations are unfounded, it says the proposed agreement would allow it to move on from years of costly litigation.
J&J’s vice president of litigation, Erik Haas, called the claims “meritless,” adding that the company believes it would have ultimately won in court.
Still, he said the settlement would “allow the company to put this matter behind it” and focus on developing life-saving medicines and medical devices.
Battles Reach Final Stage
The deal would require approval from legal teams representing 95% of the ovarian cancer claims before it can take effect.
J&J plans to pay up to $3 billion next year, with additional payments scheduled from 2028 onward.
The lawsuits date back to 2009, with plaintiffs alleging the company’s talc products were contaminated with asbestos.
J&J has consistently denied those claims, maintaining that “studies show talc is safe, does not contain asbestos and does not cause cancer.”
Whether this settlement finally closes the chapter remains uncertain.
But for both the company and thousands of claimants, the courtroom drama may be approaching its final page.
