This is Google’s third urgent Chrome update this month, and it fixes yet another zero-day vulnerability in the widely used desktop web browser.
What Is A Zero-Day Vulnerability?
A zero-day security vulnerability is a previously unknown attack that reveals a software or hardware vulnerability and can create major issues long before anybody discovers anything is amiss.
This issue usually results in the software failing or crashing, but it can also result in an attack such as hacking.
What’s Wrong With Google Chrome?
The vulnerability in question is thought to be a high-severity zero-day that attackers are actively exploiting. It has the ability to crash or produce an error in a browser, allowing malicious code to be executed.
This is Google’s 3rd update in less than one month to fix multiple zero-day vulnerabilities.
Other Affected Browsers
Any other browsers based on Chromium could be affected by these same vulnerabilities. For example, Microsoft Edge is based on Chromium.
Chromium is an open-source codebase that powers Chrome, other browsers, and programs.
Should You Update?
Yes! Google is encouraging all its users to update as soon as possible.
Simply select “About Google Chrome” from the three dots in the top-right corner of your browser window, then “Help” (Chrome). You’ll be able to see if an update is available to install here.
