US authorities raided the Washington-area home of Democratic Representative Ilhan Omar on Monday.
Raising fresh questions about the use of federal investigations against President Donald Trump’s political critics.
The Justice Department confirmed the search was part of an ongoing federal investigation.
A source familiar with the case said it concerns alleged immigration fraud, including paperwork completed by Omar’s late father when she was a child.
But why is this raid drawing such fierce political backlash?
Omar, a Somali-born lawmaker and outspoken Trump critic, accused the president of political intimidation.
“I will not be silenced,” she declared on social media.
Democratic leaders, including House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, called the operation “deeply disturbing.”
Minnesota Governor Tim Walz accused Trump of abusing his power weeks before the November 3 midterm elections.
The administration has previously warned that Omar’s family’s immigration history was under scrutiny.
Election Timing Raises Questions
Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin said last month that “something’s going to happen” in the investigation.
The timing is particularly sensitive. Federal policy prohibits investigative actions intended to influence elections.
The Justice Department has historically avoided certain steps against political candidates close to voting day.

Omar is seeking a fifth House term, while Trump’s Republicans are fighting to retain control of Congress.
The investigation remains ongoing, and the raid alone does not establish wrongdoing.
With election day approaching, the question is whether authorities can demonstrate that justice, rather than political rivalry, is driving the case.
