US Marine Arrested In Japan Over Suspected Murder of Woman

By Joe Lawson
Police continues investigation on Oct. 4 in the area where a body of dead woman found in Naha, Okinawa.

A US Marine stationed on Japan’s Okinawa island has been arrested over the alleged murder of a Japanese woman.

The incident has reignited long-standing tensions surrounding the large American military presence there.

Lance Corporal Devin Jacob Ballard, 20, is suspected of killing 39-year-old Anna Yagi at a hotel in Naha.

He is also suspected of taking her wallet and backpack.Police said Ballard denied the allegations.

So why does this case carry such weight in Okinawa?

The island hosts about 70% of US military facilities in Japan, and crimes involving American personnel have repeatedly triggered local protests.

Defence Minister Shinjiro Koizumi said such incidents “cause great anxiety among the local community”.

US Ambassador George Glass offered condolences and pledged cooperation.

Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi called the alleged crime “exceptionally brutal and vicious” and demanded stronger measures to prevent similar incidents.

Marine In Custody

Police reportedly identified Ballard after reviewing CCTV footage showing a foreign man entering a room with a woman and later leaving with her belongings.

The US military said Ballard, assigned to the III Marine Expeditionary Force, is in Japanese custody.

It stressed that Marines must meet “the highest standards of behaviour”.

With about 54,000 US troops stationed in Japan, the case raises an uncomfortable question.

How many more incidents can this already strained relationship absorb?
