Norway is mourning the death of King Harald V, as the 89-year-old monarch’s 35-year reign comes to an end and his son takes the throne.
Harald died in hospital early Friday after treatment for a rare blood condition.
Soon afterwards, thousands gathered outside Oslo’s Royal Palace, leaving flowers, flags and candles.
Around 10,000 people reportedly lined the streets as his coffin was carried to the palace.
Why did Harald inspire such affection?
He was widely known as a warm, inclusive and empathetic “people’s king” who helped modernise Norway’s monarchy.
Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre summed up the national mood, saying the country was “united in grief and gratitude.”
Haakon’s Royal Challenge
His younger child, now King Haakon VIII, has immediately stepped into the role, pledging to carry forward the royal motto: “All for Norway.”
His wife, Mette-Marit, is now queen, while their 22-year-old daughter Ingrid Alexandra becomes crown princess and heir.
But Haakon inherits more than a crown. His family has faced serious health issues and scandals, while public support for the monarchy has fallen sharply in recent years.
Still, royal experts describe the new king as respected and hardworking.
His challenge now is simple but enormous: can he preserve Harald’s legacy while steering Norway’s monarchy into a more uncertain future?
