Why would the CIA director suddenly fly to Moscow when high-level US-Russia meetings are so rare?
That is the question surrounding an unannounced visit by CIA chief John Ratcliffe, reported by CBS.
Ratcliffe reportedly arrived in Moscow on Tuesday aboard a US military C-17 transport aircraft that flew via Latvia before landing at Vnukovo airport.
The plane later left Russia, but Washington and Moscow have not confirmed who Ratcliffe met or what was discussed.
The secrecy has only fuelled speculation. Could the talks involve the war in Ukraine, intelligence matters or even detained Americans?
Moscow Visit Raises Questions
Former British military attaché John Foreman suggested the visit could focus on “escalation management”, particularly amid concerns over recent drone activity.
“The Americans don’t normally send such a high-ranking official to Moscow unannounced at short notice unless something is up,” he said.
Ratcliffe has previously been involved in negotiations over prisoner releases, including the case of Russian-American Ksenia Karelina.
The CIA also played a role in the 2024 prisoner swap that freed journalist Evan Gershkovich and former US Marine Paul Whelan.
With US-Russia relations still deeply strained and Ukraine peace efforts stalled.
Ratcliffe’s Moscow trip could carry considerable weight.
For now, though, the biggest detail remains the one nobody is explaining: why was the CIA chief really there?
