Is North America’s trade relationship heading for another major showdown?
It certainly looks that way after US President Donald Trump announced a 50% tariff on a broad range of Canadian imports.
He accused Ottawa of treating American cars, dairy products and alcohol unfairly.
The new duties, set to take effect in 30 days, will hit products ranging from wine and hockey sticks to cement.
Key exports such as energy, potash, critical minerals and fish have been exempted.
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney struck a measured tone, saying his government was ready to “intensify” trade negotiations in the coming weeks.
Trade Tensions Escalate
Ontario Premier Doug Ford, however, urged a tougher response, calling for Canada to retaliate “tariff for tariff, dollar for dollar.”
Trade experts say the move marks a significant escalation.
Economist Michael Devereux noted that the tariffs target goods previously protected under the USMCA trade pact.
He added that it reflects Washington’s growing dissatisfaction with the agreement.
The dispute comes on top of existing tariffs on steel, aluminum, copper and lumber.
It is deepening strains between two of the world’s closest trading partners.
With both sides standing firm, the 30-day countdown is underway.
The question is no longer whether tensions are rising—it’s whether diplomacy can cool them before another trade war heats up.
