First Atmosphere Found On Earth-Like Planet In Habitable Zone

Could we be one step closer to answering humanity’s biggest question: Are we alone in the universe?

Scientists aren’t claiming they’ve found alien life—but they have uncovered something just as exciting.

For the first time, researchers have detected an atmosphere around a rocky, Earth-like planet orbiting in the habitable, or “Goldilocks”, zone of another star.

The planet, LHS 1140 b, lies 48 light-years away and is considered a promising candidate for hosting conditions suitable for life.

So, what’s in the atmosphere? So far, only helium has been detected—a gas that can’t support life on its own.

But scientists believe other gases could be hiding deeper in the atmosphere.

Major Breakthrough In Search For Life

Lead researcher Dr Collin Cherubim called the finding “a big deal.”

“This is the first time anyone has found an atmosphere on a rocky planet in the habitable zone of another star,” he added.

His colleague, Dr David Charbonneau, said the discovery marks a major milestone in the search for life beyond Earth.

No evidence of living organisms has been found.

Scientists are also studying other promising worlds, including K2-18b and the TRAPPIST-1 system, but the evidence remains inconclusive.

The search for extraterrestrial life isn’t over. If anything, it’s just getting more interesting—one atmosphere at a time.
