South Korea Names First Woman Prime Minister In 20 Years

South Korea names first woman PM in 20 years.

South Korea could be on the verge of a political milestone. But how often does history quietly repeat itself with a new name attached?

President Lee Jae Myung has nominated Han Seong-sook as the country’s next prime minister.

A move that, if approved by parliament, would make her only the second woman ever to hold the post.

Han is not new to government. She currently serves as minister for Small and Medium-sized Enterprises and Startups.

And is being pitched as a leader for a country facing what officials call a “major strategic transition.”

Lee’s chief of staff, Kang Hoon-sik, put it simply: she was chosen because she can handle “growth and people’s livelihoods.”

At a time shaped by AI disruption and global uncertainty.

Why Now?

The nomination follows a strong showing for Lee’s party in recent local elections, even though it lost the symbolic Seoul mayoral race.

Those elections weren’t without issues either — ballot shortages at dozens of polling stations led to the resignation of the election watchdog chief.

If confirmed, Han would follow in the footsteps of Han Myeong-sook, South Korea’s first female prime minister back in 2006.

The parliamentary approval is expected, given the ruling party’s majority. Still, politics is never entirely predictable.

And as one political analyst noted, “In South Korea, even a sure thing can change tone overnight.”

So the real question is — will this nomination become a formality, or a new chapter in the making?
