Minneapolis is on edge again. And many are asking the same question: how did it come to this?
The fatal shooting of Alex Pretti, a 37-year-old intensive care nurse, during an immigration raid has ignited protests across the US.
It has deepened anger over federal enforcement tactics.
It’s the second US citizen killed in Minneapolis during ICE operations in less than a month — and the footage has only fuelled outrage.
Videos from the scene show a chaotic confrontation.
Outrage After Pretti Shooting
Pretti appears to be filming agents with his phone before stepping in as one officer pushes a woman to the ground.
He’s pepper-sprayed, tackled by several agents, and then shot. Ten shots ring out. No video shows him holding a gun.
Federal officials insist agents acted in self-defence, claiming Pretti approached with a firearm.
His family, witnesses and state leaders reject that account.
“Thank God we have video,” said Minnesota Governor Tim Walz. “Because what DHS is saying is nonsense.”
Hundreds gathered in freezing temperatures to mourn, light candles and chant Pretti’s name.

Protests quickly spread to New York, Chicago, Los Angeles and San Francisco, with signs reading “Justice for Alex” and “Abolish ICE.”
Minneapolis’ mayor has called for ICE to leave the state altogether. Republicans, too, are uneasy.
Senator Bill Cassidy called the incident “incredibly disturbing” and urged a full investigation.
As one protester put it: if this is law enforcement, where does accountability begin?
