Can artificial intelligence help choose which embryos have the best chance of becoming a healthy pregnancy?
According to specialists in Paris, that future is already here — and it may reshape the IVF journey for millions.
IVF has given hope to countless families, but its success rates vary widely and drop sharply with age.
Now, nearly five decades after the world’s first IVF baby, doctors say AI is stepping in as a powerful new tool.
“Artificial intelligence is here to help us select better embryos,” says Nathalie Massin of the American Hospital of Paris.
The hospital performs more than 2,300 IVF procedures each year.
Inside the lab, an embryoscope films developing embryos nonstop, capturing details like symmetry, shape, and cell division.

AI Enhances IVF
Previously, much of that data went unused. But AI models can now analyse these patterns to identify embryos with the strongest chances of implanting.
They can also flag those likely to carry abnormalities that lead to miscarriage.
Importantly, nothing is altered. “Humans will continue to make the decisions but with this additional tool,” notes Dr. Frida Entezami.
Her team hopes to cut the number of IVF cycles needed in half.
Of course, not everyone is fully convinced. Bioethicist Julian Koplin warns that patients should be informed — and allowed to opt out.
He says, “Computer algorithms are beginning to make decisions about who is brought into the world.”
Still, early reviews say the technology’s benefits far outweigh the fears.
After all, if AI can ease the emotional and financial strain of IVF, who wouldn’t welcome a little extra help in creating life?
