Collins Dictionary Picks ‘Vibe Coding’ As Word Of The Year

'Vibe coding' named word of the year by Collins Dictionary.

Ever dreamed of building your own app without touching a single line of code? Welcome to the age of “vibe coding.”

Collins Dictionary has crowned the term its Word of the Year 2025.

It describes it as the art of creating apps or websites simply by telling artificial intelligence what you want — no coding skills required.

Think: “Make me an app that plans my weekly meals,” and voilà, AI does the heavy lifting.

The phrase was coined earlier this year by OpenAI co-founder Andrej Karpathy.

He said AI tools are making it possible for developers to “forget the code even exists” and “just give in to the vibes.”

AI Shapes Modern Language

It’s a phrase that perfectly captures how tech and language are evolving hand in hand, said Collins managing director Alex Beecroft.

Of course, the results aren’t always flawless — sometimes the “vibes” don’t quite translate into bug-free software.

Still, the idea has opened up the world of app creation to anyone with imagination and a Wi-Fi connection.

Other trending words on Collins’ shortlist include “clanker” (AI-annoying robots) and “aura farming” (doing things just for the aesthetic).

Another is “broligarchy” (tech bros running the world).

Looks like 2025 isn’t just the year of AI — it’s the year of the vibe.
