So, Donald Trump just threw his weight behind Andrew Cuomo in the New York City mayoral race — or did he?
The president took to Truth Social, urging voters, “Whether you personally like Andrew Cuomo or not, you really have no choice. He is capable of it. Mamdani is not!”
Cuomo, running as an Independent after losing the Democratic primary to Zohran Mamdani, pushed back.
“He’s not endorsing me. He’s opposing Mamdani.”
Indeed, Trump didn’t mention the Republican candidate, Curtis Sliwa, warning that a vote for him “is a vote for Mamdani.”
The twist? Trump also threatened to withhold federal funding from New York if Mamdani, a democratic socialist, wins.
He called him a “communist” in a recent TV interview.
Mamdani shrugged off the label: “Kind of like a Scandinavian politician… only browner.”
New York Race Heats
At 34, Mamdani could become the city’s first Muslim mayor and its youngest in over a century.
He calls Cuomo a “puppet and parrot of Trump” and promises an alternative that reflects the dignity of all New Yorkers.
Cuomo, meanwhile, leans on his experience as former governor, insisting, “I fought Donald Trump.

When I’m fighting for New York, I am not going to stop.”
With New Yorkers facing a choice between Trump’s preferred Democrat, a progressive newcomer, or a Republican in the wings, one thing is clear.
City politics just got a lot more Trump-flavored — and confusing.
Who really benefits here — the city or the president? That’s the question voters will have to answer.
