US Signs 10-Year Defence Pact With India, Hegseth Says

US signs 10-year defence pact with India, Hegseth says.

The US and India just took a major step toward tightening defence ties — even as their trade relationship remains rocky.

US Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth announced a 10-year defence framework agreement with India on Friday.

He called it a “cornerstone for regional stability and deterrence.”

“Our defense ties have never been stronger,” Hegseth wrote on X after meeting Indian Defense Minister Rajnath Singh in Kuala Lumpur.

Both are attending the ASEAN Defence Ministers’ Meeting-Plus.

Described as “ambitious” by Hegseth, the framework promises deeper coordination, tech sharing, and joint military planning.

US–India Relations Evolve

It is a clear signal of Washington’s long-term bet on India as a key Indo-Pacific partner.

“It’s built on mutual trust and a commitment to a secure, prosperous region,” he said.

The deal comes at a tense moment.Just weeks ago, Washington slapped sanctions on Russian oil firms.

It was a blow to India, which relies heavily on Moscow’s cheap crude.

And let’s not forget the 50% tariffs Trump imposed on Indian imports.

The $100,000 H-1B visa fee hike rattled families across both nations.

Yet, despite the friction, both sides seem ready to move past old grievances.

As one analyst quipped, “When it comes to countering China, even trade wars have an expiry date.”
