Brain Dead Woman’s Baby Delivered Safely In Georgia

Baby of brain-dead woman delivered in Georgia, woman's mother says.

Adriana Smith, a 31-year-old nurse, was declared brain-dead back in February after collapsing with severe headaches caused by blood clots.

But because she was 20 weeks pregnant, doctors said they couldn’t take her off life support.

A brain-dead woman gave birth to a premature baby boy—while kept on life support because of the state’s strict abortion laws.

What’s The Reason?

Georgia’s abortion law bans ending pregnancies once cardiac activity is detected, usually around six weeks.

On Friday, Smith’s baby—named Chance—was born by C-section, weighing just 1lb 13oz. “He’s expected to be OK.

He’s just fighting. We just want prayers for him,” said his grandmother, April Newkirk, speaking to 11 Alive.

Now, as little Chance fights for survival in intensive care, his family prepares for another goodbye.

Adriana is set to be removed from life support on Tuesday.

“I shouldn’t be burying my daughter,” her mother said tearfully. “My daughter should be burying me.”

The case shines a harsh spotlight on Georgia’s abortion laws.

It is sparking fresh debate over who should have the final say—families or lawmakers.

One thing’s for sure: baby Chance’s fight is just beginning.
