Elon Musk Quits US Government Role After Clash With Trump Over Tax Bill

Elon Musk announces exit from US government role after breaking with Trump on tax bill.

Elon Musk is officially stepping away from his role in the Trump administration—and it wasn’t exactly a grand farewell.

After 130 days as a Special Government Employee heading the “Department of Government Efficiency” (or DOGE, as he cheekily called it), Musk announced on social media.

He said that his time was up.

“Thanks to President @realDonaldTrump for the opportunity to reduce wasteful spending,” he tweeted.

He added that the DOGE mission “will only strengthen over time.”

No formal goodbyes. According to insiders, Musk didn’t even have a direct chat with Trump before the announcement.

His exit was decided “at a senior staff level,” signaling a quiet, swift departure.

Why Did He Walk Away?

Musk has grown frustrated—calling the federal bureaucracy “much worse than I realised.”

He criticized Trump’s tax bill as too costly and counterproductive to his efficiency goals.

He even called White House trade adviser Peter Navarro a “moron” over tariff disputes.

Despite the exit, Musk’s efforts to trim the federal workforce—cutting about 12% so far—will continue under DOGE.

Some experts say Musk’s pullback signals the tough reality of reforming Washington.

After spending nearly $300 million backing Trump and GOP causes, Musk recently said, “I think I’ve done enough.”
