Egg Prices Are Skyrocketing & Why Your Carton May Soon Cost You More

Egg lovers, brace yourselves: the price of eggs has been skyrocketing, and experts say the worst might be yet to come.

Avian flu is wreaking havoc on flocks across the U.S., affecting millions of hens.

Since October, the outbreak has decimated egg-producing chickens. In January alone, 14.7 million hens were lost—surpassing last year’s total.

Egg Prices Expected To Rise Further

The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) reports that egg production in December was down by 4.5%, with more hens still being infected.

The report mentions that egg numbers are expected to keep falling.

The avian flu hits hens hardest because they live longer than meat chickens, making them more vulnerable to disease.

Wholesale prices for eggs have risen by 40 cents a week in some areas, with a dozen eggs now costing as much as $7.24 in New York.

Consumers aren’t immune either, as grocery stores are starting to pass on the price hikes.
