In a move that’s left millions of users staring at blank screens, TikTok has officially gone offline in the US.
The decision comes mere hours before a sweeping ban was set to take effect.
A blunt message on the app confirmed the news as users witnessed a warning message urging them to wait for the next US President to take office.
Is This It?
Adding a twist, the platform told users that Donald Trump might relieve the ban with an executive order.
Outgoing President Joe Biden passed the issue to his successor who hinted at granting TikTok a 90-day extension.
“The 90-day extension is something that will most likely happen,” Trump told NBC News, adding he’d likely announce on Monday.
Why is This An Issue?
The controversial ban stems from concerns over the app’s connections to the Chinese government.
TikTok was given until January 19 to sell its US operations to an approved buyer, but no deal materialized in time.
