Elon Musk is stirring the political pot in Germany, and the government isn’t thrilled.
On Monday, officials accused the billionaire of trying to sway February’s federal election by supporting the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) party.
The Background
The controversy stems from Musk’s guest opinion piece in Welt am Sonntag, where he called the AfD “Germany’s last hope.”
The piece even led to the newspaper’s commentary editor resigning in protest.
A German government spokesperson didn’t mince words, claiming Musk’s actions are an attempt to influence the election.
“Freedom of opinion also covers the greatest nonsense,” they added while dismissing Musk’s claims.
Musk Justifies Claims
Musk, however, remains unapologetic.
He insists his “significant investments” in Germany give him the right to comment on its politics and lauds the AfD’s stance on deregulation, taxes, and the economy.
Whether or not Elon Musk’s intervention will truly impact the elections remains uncertain.
