French President Emmanuel Macron faced vocal protests during his visit to cyclone-stricken Mayotte.
Locals booed and called for his resignation.
Macron replied to the slogans of locals, “I’m not the cyclone. I’m not responsible,” as he toured devastated areas.
What Happened?
The French President was heckled as he visited to meet the people of Mayotte, a French Indian Ocean territory.
At least 31 deaths have been confirmed in the cyclone, which struck five days earlier, leaving thousands without water and many still missing.
Macron Extends Stay
Macron extended his stay to Friday to show solidarity.
He stated that “leaving the same day could have created the idea that we come, we look, we leave.”
He pledged to send additional aid, including food and water and declared a national day of mourning in France.
Mayotte is the poorest region of France, and struggles with deep-seated economic issues and high migration from neighboring Comoros.
