South Korea has been in turmoil as President Yoon Suk-yeol declared emergency martial law.
In a late-night televised address, the president blamed the opposition for anti-state activities.
The South Korean military rushed to the parliament to take charge, and helicopters swirled over the house as the chaotic situation unfolded.
Why The President Announced Martial Law?
“To protect South Korea from North Korea’s communist threats and internal antistate elements, I have no choice but to declare martial law,” Yoon stated in his address.
The president blamed the opposition for slashing critical state budgets, claiming it led to a collapse in public safety and created a “haven for drugs.”
Under martial law, all political gatherings, labor strikes, and demonstrations are banned.
The media has been controlled, and violations could lead to arrests without warrants, the statement said.
Meanwhile, the United States said they were concerned about the developments in one of the most important allies in the region.
