Australia just dropped a bold proposal to ban social media for kids under 16.
According to Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, the ban will cover platforms such as TikTok, Facebook, Instagram, and X.
If it becomes law, the ban could set the stage for one of the world’s toughest digital age restrictions.
Violators Can Face Hefty Fine
The BBC wrote that the government’s bill could fine violators up to AU$50 million ($32 million).
The bill proposes a strict age-verification system using biometrics or government IDs to block underage users, with no loopholes for parental consent.
“This is a landmark reform,” said Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, adding it’s a wake-up call for platforms to “clean up their act.”
Bill To Get Oppositon’s Support
Support from the opposition Liberal Party seems likely, but independents and the Greens have asked for more details.
Australian Communication Minister Michelle Rowland said in response to critics that the ban is about shielding kids, not cutting them off from the Internet.
