Joe Biden made history on Sunday to become the first sitting US president to visit the Amazon rainforest.
During his trip, the President who is just a few months in office emphasized the urgent fight against climate change.
Speaking in Manaus, Brazil’s largest Amazonian city, Biden called rainforests “the most powerful solution we have” against the climate crisis.
Biden Commits Billions
He described climate change as an “existential threat” and reiterated the US’s commitment to protecting the world’s forests.
Biden unveiled major initiatives, including a $10 billion Brazil Restoration and Bioeconomy Finance Coalition aimed at restoring 20,000 square miles of Amazon land by 2030.
The US is also mobilizing funds to support reforestation projects with Brazilian partners and pledged an additional $50 million to the Amazon Fund.
Biden Toured The Forest
During the visit, Biden toured the rainforest by air and met Indigenous leaders, conservationists, and environmentalists.
In the end, he signed a proclamation declaring November 17 as International Conservation Day.
