Canada’s former justice minister, Irwin Cotler, confirmed to the BBC that Iranian agents attempted to assassinate him in October.
The newspaper was told that the Canadian authorities foiled the plot that involved two suspects.
The 84-year-old Cotler is a staunch critic of Iran’s regime and has long pushed for the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) to be labeled a terrorist organization.
Canadian Intelligence Gave Security
According to The Globe and Mail, Canadian intelligence flagged Cotler as a high-priority target for over a year.
The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) increased its protection after the October 7 Hamas attack on Israel, providing round-the-clock security, bulletproof vehicles, and armed escorts.
The plot reportedly involved two suspects but their current status remains unclear.
Why Iran Targeted Cotler?
Cotler’s criticism of Iran spans decades.
As a former MP and justice minister, he advocated for sanctions against the IRGC which Canada officially designated a terrorist group in June 2024.
