Pentagon Reports Significant Increase in Suicides in 2023

A report published by the US Department of Defense underscored once again the rising trend of suicides in the military.

According to newly released data, the suicide rate for active-duty service members rose to 28.2 per 100,000 members in 2023, up from 25.1 per 100,000 the previous year.

While this year-to-year increase is not statistically significant, officials noted a sustained upward trajectory over the past 12 years.

A 2021 study by Brown University estimated that 30,177 veterans of post-9/11 conflicts had died by suicide.

363 Active-Duty Troops Died

The report of the US Defense Department showed that the suicides of active duty soldiers touched 363 in 2023, up 32 service members from 2022.

The numbers also rose for Reservists, though the National Guard saw a slight decrease.

Pentagon To Invest $125 Million

In response to the persistent challenge, the Pentagon plans to invest $125 million in prevention and mental health programs in the coming year.

Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin has repeatedly highlighted the issue on a number of occasions and also established mental health centers in the military.

In 2012 alone, an estimated 7,500 former military personnel died by suicide.
