Archeologists Discover Roman-Era Road Beanth Famous London Road

Archaeologists have uncovered a preserved section of the ancient Roman road, Watling Street, beneath Old Kent Road in London.

This nearly 2,000-year-old road was originally constructed after the Roman invasion in AD 43.

The archeologists said it once connected the port of Dover to London and continued toward the West Midlands.

How the Ancient Roads Was Discovered?

The discovery was made during work for Southwark’s heating network expansion, with a team from the Museum of London Archaeology (MOLA) identifying the road.

The uncovered section, located near the junction of Old Kent Road and Ilderton Road, measures about 19 feet wide and nearly 5 feet high.

The Roman road contains layers of compacted gravel sealed by two layers of chalk and another layer of compacted sand and gravel.

Its multi-layered structure reveals a base of compacted gravel with layers of chalk, topped by compacted sand and gravel, which would have formed a solid surface for Roman travelers.

The discovery confirms that the modern road lies just above the ancient ones but with time, the older roads have vanished.
