China successfully launched an intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) carrying a dummy warhead into the Pacific Ocean as part of its “routine” annual training.
The missile was fired at 08:44 local time (04:44 GMT), landing in pre-designated sea areas, according to China’s defense ministry.
China Said Countries Notified in Advance
While the specific missile type and flight path were not disclosed, Chinese state media said countries were notified in advance.
Japan on the other hand said they received no such warning from the Chinese government.
China launched the dangerous intercontinental ballistic missile for first time since 1980.
Japan’s defense ministry confirmed that none of its vessels or personnel were injured in the incident.
Unusual Nature of Missile Raise Eyebrows
The geopolitical context and the unusual nature of the missile has raised eyebrows around the world.
Typically, such tests are conducted within Chinese territory, but launching an ICBM into international waters is dangerous as China prepares for invasion of Taiwan.
