Brazil Mayoral Candidate Hits Rival With Chair During Live Debate

A live televised debate for the São Paulo mayoral election took a violent turn Sunday when candidate José Luiz Datena, 67, struck his opponent Pablo Marçal, 37, with a chair.

The fight occurred during an exchange aired on TV Cultura and covered by major news outlets, including CNN, NBC, and The Washington Post.

Datena, a well-known news anchor, swung the chair at Marçal, a far-right influencer, after the former was accused of sexual harassment by the former.

Datena Declined To Apologize

Datena during his talk with reporters declined to apologize for what he did but said this shouldn’t have happened.

He said the allegation “caused serious issues for my family.” “I made a mistake, but I don’t regret it in any way,” he told reporters.

Marçal Has A Fractured Rib

CNN reported that Marçal is currently undergoing medical treatment for a fractured rib and wrist at Sírio Libanês Hospital.

In a video message, he told his supporters that he was fine and ready to be discharged.
