Nearly 300 Inmates Escape Jail in Nigeria Due To Flooding

281 prisoners were able to escape from Nigeria’s prison due to intense flooding that significantly damaged the walls.

According to Reuters, Maiduguri jail in northeastern Nigeria was hit by extreme floods that was caused by the collapse of a dam after heavy rainfalls.

The authorities have managed to detain seven out of the 281 prisoners and the search for the remaining is still underway.

Many Prisoners Were Terrorists

Governor Zulum told Reuters that the majority of the inmates held in the detention center belonged to terrorist groups.

The Nigerian Correctional Service, which operates Nigeria’s prisons, said the prisoners got the chance to escape when they were transferring them to a safe and secure facility.

NCoS spokesperson assured the public that there was no need to panic as the authorities were doing everything to bring the fugitives back.

News organizations were not able to confirm how the prisoners were going to be brought back as the authorities didn’t respond to further requests.
