Tech billionaire Jared Isaacman made history on Thursday by performing the first private spacewalk wearing a special space suit.
A SpaceX video showed Isaacman emerging from the SpaceX capsule hundreds of miles above Earth along with SpaceX engineer Sarah Gillis.
The tech billionaire spent 10 minutes outside the spacecraft after being joined by Sarah.
Spacewalk Was Shorter Than Typical Walks
This spacewalk was shorter than the typical NASA spacewalk, lasting less than two hours compared to the seven- to eight-hour outings.
Isaacman tested the spacesuit’s flexibility, keeping a hand or foot attached to the capsule at all times.
Spacewalk Aimed At Mars Exploration
The dubbed Polaris Dawn flight is the first of three in a program Isaacman has funded in partnership with SpaceX.
The historic feat was focused on testing new space technologies with the ultimate goal of Mars exploration in the near future.
NASA Administrator Bill Nelson praised the walk and called it “a giant leap forward for the commercial space industry.”
