A New York Times investigation into Telegram revealed that the platform has become a hub for illegal and extremist activities.
Analyzing over 3.2 million messages from 16,000 channels, the report found that white supremacist groups, weapons dealers, and drug traffickers use the messaging service to operate with relative impunity.
Telegram Owner Agrees
Telegram CEO Pavel Durov agreed with the latest allegations against the platform but promised to remove extremist content.
“We take down millions of harmful posts and channels every day,” but there is room for improvement, Durov said.
The New York Times report was published a week after Mr. Durov was arrested in France over allegations of hosting dangerous content on Telegram.
Durov Hits Back
Durov said that the allegations against him were exaggerated and “misguided”.
In a post on Telegram on Thursday, Durov said such measures are counterproductive as it will deter innovative thinking in the field of technology.
