Investigation Finds TikTok Helped Germany’s Far-Right Party Win

TikTok has played an important role in boosting the popularity of Germany’s far-right party, Alternative for Germany (AfD), a research reveals.

According to recent analysis, TikTok fueled far-right content in Germany among young voters while suppressing progressive views. 

Far-Right Reached More People

German media and researchers have linked the AfD’s success in recent regional elections in Saxony and Thuringia to its strong presence on TikTok.

Researchers from the University of Potsdam, including Professor Roland Werwiebe, coordinated a project that monitored political activity on TikTok.

According to previous surveys, more than 50% of the young population of Germany get their political news from TikTok, which makes it a worrying sign for democracy.

The platform is facing ban in the US for sharing users’ data with the Chinese government

TikTok Targeted Young Minds

The research published by the DW News revealed that the platform continuously targeted young minds between 18 and 24.

This young group of individuals were continuously bombarded with similar content with much higher frequency that the platform did with other party narratives.
