Australia has introduced a “right to disconnect” law, allowing employees to ignore work-related communications after hours without fear of repercussions.
The new regulation aims to help workers achieve a better work-life balance and ignore calls and emails from bosses after work hours.
Bosses Can Contact Employees
The new law does not prohibit employers from contacting their staff after hours but employees can now have the right to ignore.
Companies or individuals can face hefty fines by Australia’s Fair Work Commission if they failed to abide by the new law.
The law was deemed necessary after a survey was published last year that employees were not paid for extra 281 hours of work at home.
Law Praised
The Australian Council of Trade Unions and workplace experts have praised the law as it helps both the employees and employers.
The Australian Council of Trade Unions said the law “will empower workers to refuse unreasonable out-of-hours work contact and enabling greater work-life balance”.
