Meta has just confirmed the FBI’s assessment that Iranian hackers have attacked WhatsApp accounts of leading presidential campaigns.
Meta said in a statement that it found WhatsApp accounts linked to Iranian hackers targeting accounts of Donald Trump, Joe Biden and Kamala Harris.
The confirmation surfaced days after the FBI concluded that Iran was behind the sabotage attempts attacking Trump’s campaign emails.
Attacks Targeted Scores of Officials
Meta stated that an Iranian hacking group called the APT42 was responsible for attacking accounts of US, the UK and the Middle East.
The company didn’t reveal the names of other victims who were targeted by hackers.
The cluster of network of hackers disguised as tech agencies such as Microsoft, Yahoo and Google sent suspicious messages to officials, but they were blocked immediately.
No Evidence of Harm
The tech giant did confirm that none of the victims’ accounts were compromised in the process.
Meta dubbed the sabotage attempt to cyber espionage and an attempt to interfere in the upcoming US elections.
