Satellite snaps Image of Ancient Mars Lake Bigger Than Any on Earth

High resolution satellite images of Mars released by the European Space Agency shows a lake bigger than any on the surface of the Earth.

Mars Express orbiter captured a stunning view of Lake Eridania, a massive ancient lake on the Red Planet that once held more water than any lake on Earth.

Scientists believe that the lake once covered an area of over a million km2, bigger than Mexico.

A Lot of Water Once Existed

The Mars Express orbiter, which has been circling the Red Planet for two decades, has captured detailed images of the eroded remains of Lake Eridania.

This huge lake, which dwarfed Earth’s largest lake, the Caspian Sea, once filled a vast region on Mars.

ESA noted in a statement, “We believe that water, and a lot of it, once existed here.”

Growing evidence gathered by scientists suggest that the Red Planet was once home to a huge reserve of water which gradually vanished due to solar radiation.
